Thank you VERY MUCH, Mary Ellenand Paet. My Patrick was listed, along
with many others in the 1860 census in that orphanage.

Paet was kind to suggest St. Brigits for my Patrick Fitzgerald family.
I have asked the Diocese for any information on my Patrick. I assume St.
Brigit's records are archived in the Diocesan office and that they were
checked for Patrick.

What I did receive from the Diocese was the christening for a Patrick
Fitzgerald, son of Patrick and Ellena Lollard May 8 1853 in St. John's
Cathedral. Realizing that sometimes birthdays are wrongly remembered, I
thought this might be a possible lead. However, I cannot trace this
family either. (My Patrick's birthday is April 1854)

At this point the only documented information that I have is the 1860
census, and a statement from the Diocese that Patrick was 'adopted' by
the McGonnell family in Pennsylvania.

Thank you for your help! Any further suggestions will be appreciated!

Caroline

Caroline~
There was indeed an orphanage in those times run by the Sisters of

Charity. It was either at the present day site of St. Vincent Charity
Hospital or in the vicinity of it. As you walk into the lobby today
there is
a picture or reference to it per my sister. She has worked for the
organization since university. I had just this past week received data
on
our g great grandmother from another lister. Sharing it with my sister
and
also your message, her first comment was "Oh my God! When I am at the
hospital I pass, etc., etc." In the 1880 census our g grandmother had
placed
two, 5 yr. old sons in their care since she was a young widow in 1875.
She
then became a servant in the home of a Conrad Beck.
Rette, (my sister) said she would look into possibility of records

being somewhere for research. Will save your note and if she finds out
anything I'll get back to you.
