I ran across this interesting bit of family history recently from the "Garfield Heights History" by August Kleinschmidt (founder of The Garfield Leader) and Neil Bowler, pg. 21
"Prior to electricity being available for street lighting purposes, in the 1910s, men were hired to take care of the gas lamps on the streets.
One such person was Harry C. McEachern, who has lived at 4927 East 84th St., Garfield Heights, since 1922. He is the father-in-law of Lal DiEgidio, of the dry cleaning establishment on Garfield Blvd.
This lamplighter rode his bicycle to service the gas lamps in Garfield Park. He also carried his ladder and tools with him."
Harry McEachern was married to Elizabeth LANIGAN, daughter of Charles LANIGAN and Sarah BURNS who were siblings of my great-grandparents Mary LANIGAN and Charles BURNS. Harry and Elizabeth had two daughters, Harriette who married Lal d'Egidio and Loretta who married Charles Oberdoerster.
The LANIGANs and BURNS families were east side, Harvard-Broadway area Irish and attended Holy Name Church.
