I'll try both Cooney and Rooney, but he was an adult when he arrived in the
U.S. (he earned U.S. citizenship as a Union soldier in the War Between the
States) and the family had enough money (which would indicate SOME education,
I think) to have portraits (well, daguerrotypes or the comparable for that
time) made of my great-grandmother, age 4, in 1864 -- I would think he'd have
corrected it if whomever wrote down the information made an error. Besides,
he arrived as an adult in Canada first... Family history has it that the
family was from Cobh (contemporary Cork), Ireland, so I'm going to look for
Irish locations where names were common.
