Carolyn~
Chalkies was in existence to my childhood memories in November 1946.
My Grandfather died November 18, 1946 in the family Plumbing Shop on Bridge
Ave.; Friel Plumbing. I think the small A&P next to the Bar was there at
that time too; about W 48th St., south corner on Bridge Ave. I remember the
wooden floor, and square wood tables. The bar was a long, probably mahogany
one with hi bar stools, Grandpa would lift me up on. I assume now that I am
an adult, that either or both alcohol and cards or some sort of gambling was
going on in the back room on those long ago Sunday mornings.
