I graduated from Julienne in 1947 and since I lived south of town I passed
the Civil War Monument twice a day for four years. I am 99.9% sure the
monument was still there when I graduated.

In the back recesses of my mind I recall the debate over the removing of the
statue from the middle of Main St and Monument Ave. I sorta' recall the
debate took place during an election year. I have no recollection which
party was for or which party was against it. But I do recall it was the
first time I had heard the word conservative to describe a member of the
Republican Party.

I will suggest that the monument was moved ca1948/49 to near the north side
of the Salem Ave bridge. Of course there was another debate which way the
monument should face: south , toward downtown or north. I would never had
remembered but I recall the joke going around at the time that the reason
the monument faced south so the soldier could pee in the river.

I do remember when the garage building was opened to the public when I was
a kid and I was born in 1947 also, but have no memory of the school still
being there. But the funny thing to me is I could swear I remember going
around the statue in the middle of the street when I was little but
everything says it was moved before I was born, that has always drove me
crazy, and I know it is not back in the same spot as it was then either.
