Hermon Brown Fagley and Adams County History Buffs,

I read about the forts, Crawford, etc and enjoyed it very much and I
wanted to add to your
confusion and asked for help also. Herman's letter is at the end of this
mail.

In about 1792 a fort was build at the mouth of Quicks Run, Lewis county,
Kentucky and
Jacob Stricklett was Captain of this fort.--Lewis county History
JACOB STRICKLETT married in Adams County, Ohio in 1798, a MARTHA COX.
Lewis County, Kentucky records state that MARTHA COX was a widow , her
husband
being killed by Indians. This was suppose to be at 'WASHINGTONVILLE',
SETTLEMENT ON THE WEST BANK OF BRUSH Creek AT THE OHIO RIVER.
It was said MARTHA OR MARGARET COX maiden name was McCLEASE. Some
relatives feel she was married before COX to a STOUT.

Does anyone have any information about this above Indian Killing? I have
tried to get
the History of Adams County on inter library loan but can not get it as
they say it is a
reference book.

JACOB STRICKLETT's father, PETER STRICKLETT was a scout under Colonel
Crawford in his Expedition against the Delaware and Wyandotte Indians, in
which his
command was practically annihilated. Colonel Crawford was captured and
burnt at the
stake 13 June 1782. Peter and other scouts wise in Indian lore, seeing
the tide of battle
turning, immediately decamped for Fort Pitt, thus escaping the fate of
most of Crawfords
command.

Hermon Brown Fagley's letter
I've been studying a shadowy adea of history. What was going on just
south of ADAMS
CO,OH. The fort at MANCHESTER, on the Ohio side, has been written
about. Isreal
Donaldson, in describing his capture east of Manchester, described beeing
able to see
men walking around Graham's Station [RICHARD] just across the river from
the mouth
of Ohio Brush Creek. Graham station people must have pre-dated
MANCHESTER-they
got the bottoms on the Ohio side, not the Manchester people. The noted
Col WM
CRAWFORD'S kinsmen. He,of 1st present JEFFERSON CO,WV, AND THEN
Connellsville,Pa, who was tortured to death after his noted 1782 defeat.
[My Capt George
Brown was along,and was wounded,and had 1 MCQUEEN bro-in-law killed,and
another
captured.] I ramble. GRIMES,CRAWFORD'S, STEPHENSON'S, 1ST Later
PAGE,CONNELL,sPRINGER,etv. RICHARD GRAHAM'S widow's will is in Mason
Co,ky. 100 acres just below the mouth of Ohio Brush CREEK. Stephenson's
laid out
CONCORD Ky at the site of the fort, and both Col WM,and his full bro Val
crawfords,
had sons in either LEWIS CO KY OR S ADAMS. HONOR GRIMES CRAWFOED
STEPHENSON also had GRIMES AND STEPHENSON near the mouth od OHIO
BRUSH CREEK. Iron may have been on the mine of those at Graham'S STATION.
There was an iron bloomery on the lands sold by richard and honor
CRAWFORD
STEPHENSON BACK IN JEFFERSON CO, very, very ne WV. And the farm selected
by
COL WM CRAWFORD IN 1765, BECAME Isaac Meason's iron furnace soon after
the
Col's death. Iron. Iron Ridge WAS THE 1ST NAME FOR THAT TOWNSHIP NE
OF
OHIO BRUSH CREEK. It soon had iron furnaces and forges. Did the men
at
RICHRD GRAHAM'S STATION eye OHIO bottomland,or iron ridges? The 2nd
fort is
more shadowy. BLOCK HOUSR STATION,at the mouth of Quick's Run, just
downriver
from VANCEBURG. Not at the big salt licks ,but near .ROUGHLY ACROSS FROM
ROME. QUICK'S and Stout's were from AMWELL Township,Hunterdon Co,NJ,
WITH
A STOP OVER in sw Pa. Their fort may have been 1788-89. Lady here on AOL
told me
QUICK was captured there in 1789,and taken to CANADA, where he,and his
descs
stayed. There is several mentions of Obediah stout's having kinsmen
killed,and
wounded, at more than 1 station, but there still is a STOUT'S run
downriver from
Quick'S RUN,n the KY, SIDE, plus the Stout's Run,on the Ohio side. Was
there a fort,on
the Ky side,at BROOKS BOTTOM,across from very sw ADAMS ? MRS BROOKS WAS
A DAU OF MRS RICHARD GRAHAM. . LT JOIHN CRAWFORD,IN 1787,SOLD
EVERYTHING IN PA TO RICHARD GRAHAM. WHERE AM I WRONG? WHO
CAN ADD TO MY UNDERSTANDNG? WHO KNOWS THE TRUE EARLY
HISTORY OF LEWIS CO,KY? Where was MILLS STATION?
