Subject: [OHADAMS-L] Calling all MCCOLLUMS!
Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 02:47:08 -0500

Hello Adams Co.,
The first purpose of this message is to announce MCCOLLUM-L, a mailing
list dedicated to the surname MCCOLLUM and its variations (e.g.
MCCALLUM). We have found that famlies of the clan MCCOLLUM may have
migrated to Adams Co., OH,
in the early 1800's. We urge all interested in MCCOLLUM family
history to join our list! To subscribe, include the word "subscribe"
(no quotes) in the body of a NEW message to
(mail mode delivers messages one at a
time) or
(digest mode delivers messages in
batches).
Afterwards, additional instructions will follow by email.

The second purpose is to query all of Adams Co. regarding my own
elusive MCCOLLUMS. My grandfather was Hugh Burritt McCOLLUM b 1857 in
Augusta, Bracken Co., KY, d 1923 in Poland Twp., Mahoning Co., OH, son
of Hugh McCOLLUM b 1807 d 1900 in OH and Minerva Jane MAXWELL b 1821
in Adams Co., OH, d 1909 in Chicago, IL.
It is my great-grandfather Hugh McCollum, refered to by my grandmother
as "Dr. Hugh," that is most elusive. He married Minerva Jane Maxwell
in Augusta, Bracken Co., KY in 1843. Their children were born in
Felicity, Clermont Co., OH and some in Augusta, Bracken Co., KY which
appear to be on opposite sides of the Ohio river. His children were:
Joseph William b 1843 in Felicity, Clermont, Co., OH; Emma Louise, b
1845; Anna Belle, b 1847 in Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., OH; Charley C.,
b 1850; Clara Jane, b 1853; James Leslie b. 1855 in Augusta, KY; Hugh
Burritt b 1857 in Augusta, KY; George Thomas b 1860; Frank Sigel b
1862; Frederick Winans b 1865; and Sallie Josephine b ?
I couldn't find a KY death certificate for any of these children. I
did find in the 1870 census, Hugh McCollum and family living in
Augusta, Bracken Co., KY, the same small town where my grandfather was
born. I believe that "Dr. Hugh" was a teacher at the methodist
college at Augusta, KY, and his parents and siblings must have lived
in either in Clermont Co. or Adams Co. OH, or with the
MCCOLLUMS farther east.
Do the above names ring any bells?
