hi, my name is Linda kj Newman Johnson, I have a lot of info on the Newmans,
but I'm afraid they hid the Indians really well, I lived in Phx for the last
22 years, with the exception of being back here in Adams Co. again for the
last couple of years.. In Az. I seen, what I believe to be either a Newman
family, or my mothers side of the family( she is of native blood line
herself) that was listed as Porteuguese, at that time I had just started, and
wasn't smart enough to make a copy of it, thinking it couldn't be true, we
weren't portuguese, but since that time, I have found that the Cherokee,
after the removal to Oklahoma, the ones who hid in the mountains were told to
list themselves as Portuguese, so they wouldn't be found . I have went thru
the census in West Union, Ohio, Family genealogy Center, and its not there!
In Ariz. one of the ladies who worked at the LDS Center in Mesa, was
Cherokee, and she had extensive research on the Cherokee, so I'm thinking,
maybe thats where I had seen it. in the Indian Census! I'm hoping to go back
home in the fall, my kids are in Phx, Az. ,and Las Vegas, NV., Philadephia,
Pa. and Step son in So Ohio. When I do, I plan to search until I find it
again! My grandfather(Clarence Newman) looked very native, but I'm finding
there was indians on his mother side as well as the Newmans. His name was
Clarence Edward Newman, his father is Andrew Bird Newman, and then his father
was Samuel Drake Newman, and his father was Samuel Newman marr, Nancy ???????
, But I think she was a Jones, my gr Grandfather Andrew Bird Jones was
supposedly part native american, and part Welsh, but if he had a grandfather
who was a Jones, Nancy had to be a Jones! I know his brother Barton was
married to Catherine Jones, and we all know how they intermarried. Also,
Nancy Newman marr Hiram Jones, and then later marr Jackson Cross.
I suppose you already know the story of Mary Jane Newman being the
grandaughter of Tecumseh! her father was Thomas Newman, marr to Fannie
Penn,(Thomas was the son of Christopher and Sarah Ross) and Fannies parents
were Shadrack Penn, marr. Jennie Cross, Jennie was adopted( kidnapped by the
whites) by the Cross family after thier daughter was kidnapped by the
indians. She was supposed to have been the daughter of Tecumseh! I have a
picture of Mary Jane Newman, do you have a copy of the Newman Tree, thats
almost as big as a real tree? Ha! Well, I hope I may have answered a couple
of questions for you. write me direct (its Indian for
Clay Hummingbird.) Yes, i have a lot of indian features have found 15 lines
in my tree, thats enough that I have joined the Ani Tslagi (Many Cherokee)
tribe in Waverly Ohio, I have a Card, and I do alot of Pow Wows, and enjoy my
life while I'm not working, always worked in the health field, Medical
Assitant, hurt my back in 1993,in a car accident, driving the hospital car,
and have not been able to work since. I have also recently been diagnosed
with Diabetis. Enough of that! Let me know your Newman Line, also I believe
I have seen where the Boyds were married into the native american lines, I
had a very close friend who I went to school with, by the name of Arlyn Boyd,
what a guy! very handsome and very dark, he went to school with me at Locust
Grove for I believe all 12 years. I loved him like a brother! We graduated
in 1965, and he died just a few years later. He was Killed by Car fumes.
WRITE BACK SOON! Can't wait to talk to you. Linda k Jaunice Newman Johnson.
I live on at 573 Black Hollow Rd. Peebles, Ohio in a camper.
