the 1875 Historical Atlas of Allen County, Ohio by H H Hardesty & Co.
Publishers, Chicago.
Please note: I do not have any further information on the individuals
mentioned here. I have only transcribed the profile as it was originally
written.
J W BUSSERT's parents, Adam and Hannah, came from Fairfield County, in 1834.
Their children are Nancy, Elizabeth, Jane and John. His wife is a daughter of
David S. and Terzah Young, who came from Fairfield County, in 1835, and whose
children are Rachel Ann, Elmer, Margaret, Sarah and Caroline. Mr. and Mrs.
Bussert are both natives of Allen County. He was born Oct. 25, 1836--she,
Jan. 20, 1844. The residence of Mr. B.'s father was burned down in 1850, all
contents destroyed. The old log house in which Mr. B. was born was so low
that adult persons were compelled to stoop in walking through the room. When
a boy, had to go fifty miles to mill, and sometimes obliged to wait for the
grist six or seven days.
EBENEZER DAVIS, son of Henry and Mary Davis, was born in this township, on
the 1st of September, 1844. His father came to this county in 1832, from
Pennsylvania. His mother came from Butler County, Ohio. They have six
children--Jane, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Margaret, Silas, and Ebenezer. His wife
was born at Utica, N. Y., in June, 1843. Her parents, Edward and Sarah
Morris, are from North Wales. They came to Allen County in 1855. Their
children are Jane, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Annie, Harriet, and
William.
DR. JOHN DAVIS was born in Cincinnati, July 31, 1837, and in 1848 came to
this county with his parents, Ebenezer and Margaret Davis, whose children are
John, Ebenezer, Elizabeth, William, Edward, Martha Ann and Benjamin. Dr.
Davis has held the office of township clerk.
JOHN D EDWARDS was born in this township, October 16, 1841. His parents,
Thomas and Anna Edwards, came to this county in 1839, from Cincinnati. They
were originally from North Wales. Mrs. Edwards is a daughter of Jenkin and
Mary Jones, who came from South Wales in 1839, and whose children are
William, Jonathan, Mary Ann, Evan, and Elizabeth.
JOHN EVANS and his wife are natives of Caermarthenshire, South Wales. He was
born June 10th, 1810--she in Oct., 1805. They have six children living (See
J. P. Williams). Mr. E. is a son of Timothy and Ann Evans, and brother of
Benjamin, David, Daniel, Elizabeth, Mary and Evan Evans. Mrs. Evans was Mary
Bynon, daughter of Evan and Sarah Bynon, and sister of Esther, Ann, Margaret
and Elizabeth. When Mr. Evans and his family first came to this county
(1843), they lived in a temporary log hut, sleeping on the floor, and
subsisting principally on corn bread baked on a board before a log fire. Wild
deer were so plentiful that they often came into enclosures and fed with the
domestic animals. The howling of wolves could be heard every night. Went to
St. Marys or Sidney to mill, and to Toledo for salt. There was very little
money in circulation, and no markets. Butter was worth four cents a pound,
wheat forty cents a bushel, corn twelve cents, cows $8 a head, horses $40,
and wages twenty-five cents a day and in harvest time fifty cents or one
bushel of wheat.
WILLIAM R EVANS and his wife are natives of South Wales, G. B. Their children
are Ellen, John (deceased), Alice, Silas, Charlotte (deceased), Isabella,
Amos, and Harriet. Mr. Evans is a son of Thomas and Ellen Evans, still
residing in South Wales, and whose children are John, Mary (Mrs. L. Lewis),
William R., Winifred, David, the Rev. Evan Evans (deceased), Ellen (Mrs.
Oliver), and Margaret (deceased). Mrs. Evans was Mary Jones, daughter of John
and Anna Jones, who died in South Wales. She has a brother, John Jones.
ELLIS FRANCIS, son of Francis and Catharine, and brother of Hugh F.,
Margaret, John and Mary, was born in North Wales, Nov. 13, 1806. His wife is
a daughter of Owen and Ursilla Jones, whose children are Richard, Evan, Ann,
Griffith and William. Mrs. F. was born in North Wales, in August, 1817.
BENJAMIN GRIFFITHS is a son of Joseph and Jane, and brother of Joseph,
Elenor, Mary, Evan and Ebenezer Griffiths. He was born in Butler County in
1829, and came to Allen County in 1836 with his parents. "In those days the
nearest grain markets were at Lake Erie and the Ohio River; therefore farmers
raised barely grain enough to supply their families with bread and salt.
There was a water mill on Hog Creek, but when the water was low we had to go
to Sidney, or Piqua, to mill. There was plenty of wild game." Mrs. Griffiths
was Julia Ann Aumspaucher, born in Fairfield County, 1830. They have eight
children--Vincent (deceased), Isaac Newton (deceased), Jason M., Ida C.,
Herbert G. (deceased), Sarah Jane, Josephine and Henderson F. Mrs. G. is a
daughter of George and Rebecca Aumspaucher, whose children are Mahala, Julia
Ann, Clara, John, Samuel and Jessie.
