Does anyone know what the 'great plague' was referring to?

Mrs. Marry HARROD, one of the prominent residents of Waynesfield, died at
her home yesterday noon, from consumption, aged 55 years. She was the wife
of Josiah HARROD, a "fortyniner", who assumed a fortune in the gold fields
of California in an early day. She had suffered from the great plague for
years and only recently returned from a trip to the sunny climes of Florida,
where she was not benefitted. The funeral will be held tomorrow.
