For Norman Smith:
Because Ashland County was formed from Richland, Wayne, Huron, and Lorain counties in 1846, you might want to check those counties as well. Some of my husband's ancestors are from Mifflin, however, their marriage certificate is found in Richland County.
Richland has birth records from 1856, marriages from 1813, death records from 1890, land records from 1814, probate records from 1813, and court records from 1819.
Huron County has birth records from 1858, marriage and probate records from 1820.
>From The Handy Book for Genealogists: "the original Wayne Co.. was established 15 Aug 1796, this Co.. disappears from Ohio in 1803 when Ohio became a state; it ultimately became Wayne Co. Michigan' the present Wayne Co. Ohio was erected 13 Feb 1808.
Hope this helps in your search.
Dale
