I have recently come into possession of woven wool coverlet or laprobe, very
similar to the Meily coverlet as shown on the Richland Co. site. In the
corner is a woven block "J. Hartman Milton Township, Richland County, Ohio 1839".
I have learned that in 1846 Milton Twp. was reorganized and became part of
Ashland Co. Using the 1850-1880 census, I have found John HARTMAN in Perry
Twp., Ashland Co., b. 1806 in PA to German parents. His occupation was given
as coverlet weaver, weaver, and carpet weaver - so likely he is the one that
made my coverlet.
His wife was Elizabeth (b 1823 PA). All of their children were born in OH:
Mandila/Mandella (b 1843), Henry (b 1846), Mary (b 1848), E. Curtis (b
1851), Daniel W. (b 1853), Emmit L. (b 1854), Almeda R. (b 1858),
Silverdell/Sylvia D. (b 1864). Also located Curtis in the 1910 census in Lafayette, Perry
Twp. At that time he was 59 and single. His occupation was not legible.
I would like to learn more about John Hartman and his family. It would also
be interesting to guess how the coverlet made it to Mercer Co., MO. It was
in my uncle's family for many years. It may have traveled with the Minter
family from Madison Co., OH or the Drake family from Harding Co., OH in the
mid-1800s.
Thanks!
