Some of you may have seen this site, but for those that haven't, you are
going to become addicted!!! Every state isn't listed, but Ohio and MO
are. Go to this site and put in your own zipcode so they can track where
interested people are, hit Search land patents and you will see another
screen. Select the state. On the next screen, put in the surname you are
searching for under patentees name. You don't have to use a first name.
I'll use Adair, as I see someone is looking for that. Go down to the
lower part and hit genealogical search again. It will bring up ALL the
Adairs that received land in Ohio.
I'll select Andrew, since he's the first. Now it brings up that he paid
cash, he went to Lima, Ohio and the lower part shows what you need to
know. Jot down the Sec/Blk (35), the township (7-S) and the Range (5-E).
You can also see that he was in Shelby County, but you don't really NEED
that. That's just FYI. If you want to see your ancestor's signature, hit
view the document. You can order it as well, if you want. But for the
REALLY fun part...go back to the screen where you input the surname. I
hit the "back" key twice. The first time it says "DATA MISSING". The 2nd
time it comes back. NOW. Go to the lower half of it, and put in the
data. Sec 35, township 7...then select s, range 5 and select 5 and hit
genealogical search. NOW...here are your ancestor's neighbors! You know
they married someone closeby. Chances are THESE are surnames you are
familiar with! And hopefully, the FATHER of the spouse...so another
generation back! It's great. I KNOW you'll enjoy this site!
