When I first began researching my Beckley line, I found what would be a
reference to my third great grandmother, SALLY COLLINS. A biography of
her oldest son, H. Nelson Beckley that was posted on the Meigs County,
Ohio rootsweb site, referred to her maiden name She would marry
Jonathan Beckley between 1806 when his first wife died and 1812, the
year Nelson was born. Future Ohio census records would list her as being
born in 1790, which often meant somebody was born around said year.
Those Ohio census records say she was born in Ct, as was Jonathan
Beckley. I can't find a marriage record for the couple anywhere in the
Barbour Collection of records for Ct. The Canaan Twp, Litchfield
County, now North Canaan Twp or Falls Village Town Clerks can find no
marriage record, either. Jonathan's family had been in Canaan Twp, in
fact I did find Jonathan's birth record in the collection as well as his
parents marriage record(Joseph Beckley and Jane Bosworth) in Canaan Twp,
Litchfield County, Ct.
Going through the Barbour Collection I found two ladies about the
correct age to be my Sally Collins. One was born in Somers, Tolland
County and the other in Barkhamsted, Litchfield County. The one born in
Barkhamsted had been my "favorite" due to proximity and her birth record
actually listing her as "Sally", just as my Sally had actually signed
various records in Athens County, Ohio. Her parents were listed as
Nathaniel Collins and Rachel Walling. I've recently found
familysearch.org postings suggesting she though married a Reynold
Newell, and indeed a man of that name is living near Nathaniel Collins
in the 1820 census.
The other Sarah Collins is listed as the child of Joseph Collins and
Grace Brown, in Somers, Tolland County, Ct. I always had assumed her to
be "too far away".
But I always relearn the lesson not to assume. I can't find a listing of
marriage or death for her, anywhere on rootsweb, genforum, ancestry or
familysearch.org.
Can someone search Somers, Tolland County and Enfield, Hartford County
records for either a marriage listing between 1806 and 1812 or death
listing after 1787 for Sarah Collins, daughter of Joseph and Grace Brown
Collins? I can be reached at .
Can someone search Canaan Twp and Barkhamsted and Falls Village,
Litchfield County records for either a marriage listing between 1806 and
1812 or death listing after 1788 for Sally Collins, daughter of
Nathaniel and Rachel Walling Collins? Again, I can be reached at
.
I invite anyone who has a listing anywhere in Ct. for a Sarah/Sally
Collins being married between 1806 and 1812 or who has a direct ancestor
or sibling of a direct ancestor whose name was Sally/Sarah Collins, born
around 1790 in Connecticut, to e-mail me at . I'm sure it's
possible the Barber Collection missed someone's records and my SALLY
COLLINS may be the child of someone not mentioned herein.
I descend from Jonathan and Sarah/Sally Collins Beckley and on through
son Walter and wife Hannah Conner Beckley and on through Samuel and
Almira Jane Canny Beckley, who settled in Vinton County, Ohio.
