Death of Samuel W. Chapin.
Samuel Wesley Chapin, who died suddenly Saturday morning at his home,
133 Florence street, was 72 years of age, the son of Ezekiel and Betsy
Frost Chapin and a lineal descendant of the famous Dean Chapin of colonial
times. Mr. Chapin was born in East Longmeadow, February 23d, 1824, and
at an early age began the stern battle of life. From the earliest start he
showed of what sterling stock he came, for he entered most cheerfully and
manfully into the serious things he was called to brave. Of the refined
tastes
he showed a decided inclination for architecture, and this he studied for a
time, afterward engaging for a while in building in company with the late
D. L. Swan. For a number of years he was employed at the armory and will
long be remembered for the faithfulness with which he executed the minutest
detail of his tack. While residing since manhood for limited periods in
Bridgeport and Wallingford, Connecticut, Mason and Chicopee, the greater
part of his life had been spent in this city. He joined Asbury chapel on
Hickory street and has ever since continued a member of the denomination.
He is survived by his wife, two children, Henry E., a professor of biology
in the
Ohio University, Athens, Ohio and Emma R., a teacher in the Worthington
street school and organist at Asbury church, and a brother, Elias F. of
Belchertown.
