Birth Certificates prior to 1908 -- Ohio started registering birth & death
records about 1867. These records were maintained in the Probate Court.
Sometimes the names of the parents were listed in the books and many times they were
not. In 1908, the responsibility of maintaining these records was transferred
to the Health Departments. If a person was born in the country, you might
find a birth record that was, at a later date, brought into the court to be
registered. If born in the city, the birth was probably registered and it all
depended on the doctor. Sometimes, the doctors wouldn't register the birth right
away. So, check out the Probate Court records and see if there might be a
record. Roberta
