Hi All,
I have been trying forever to research the family of John E. (Edward?)
Davis. The only information I have on him is that he was born in Ohio (don't
know where) and so was his father. (derived from census information) His date
of birth was 16 March 1827, and date of death 16 October 1908. We first found
him on the census of 1850, living with a farmer named Phillip Jarvis, in
Guernsey County. On 3 March 1851, he was married to Susanna Carpenter by that
same Phillip Jarvis. We beleive that Phillip Jarvis was an Elder in the
Church of Christ at the Palestine Ridge Church outside of Batesville. We also
beleive that Susanna had a first name beginning with "A" that she did not
use. John and Susanna had seven children. Samuel was born in Monroe County in
1851, Julia Ann was born in Monroe County in 1856, Mary Emma was born in
Noble County in 1859, Louisa Malissa was born in Noble County in 1863, George
Mason was born in Washington County in 1865, and two sons were born in Wetzel
County WVa. Jacob A. in 1869, and Wilford in 1873. The family lived in
various places in Ohio until the late 1860s, when they moved to the Proctor
Creek area of WVa. They lived there until the late 1870s, when the moved to
Earnshaw WVa, where they lived out their lives. John and Susanna are both
buried at the Carpenter Cemetery at Earnshaw. We have been able to trace most
of their descendents, and in fact have a complete family tree of the
Carpenter family, but can find no trace of the parents of John E. Davis. All
we have is a gravestone in a lonely country cemetery on Hinermans Ridge in
the mountains of WVa., that lists his name, date of birth, and date of death.
We can find no death certificate or record of his death.
Any information would be appreciated.
