In past years, genealogists had a really bad reputation in courthouses.
Genealogists were thought of as rude and demanding . In recent years
our reputation has gotten a lot better = we've been reminded to mind our
manners. In the genealogy classes I've taught, one of the first things
I tell everyone is that courthouse workers are not there specifically to
help us with our family history. They have a job to do for the county
and they can be very busy at times.
Belmont Co. Probate court has gone out of their way to make sure that we
have a space in their office to work at. Just as anywhere else, they do
have certain rules you have to abide by while there. Just be friendly
and don't be a pest and they'll help as much as they can. The county
recorders office also has a lot of nice people working in it. I"ve
never had a problem with any of them. The same goes for the Clerk of
Courts. Someone will take you up and show you where the records are and
explain them, and then they turn you loose to go thru records to your
hearts content. The county engineers office is the same way.....very
helpful.
Smile, be patient and remember to thank everyone for their help.
Imagine what it would be like to try to do your job with people coming
in and bothering you all the time.
