Christina, The birth date could possibly have come from his Civil War
pension file.
You will want to send for his pension file from the National Archives. This
link will tell you how to get this.

Pension files for my ancestors and their brothers have been a gold mine for
my research. The pension file of Oliver Cable Everly, my ancestor's brother
even gave me the mother's maiden name - which unfortunately turned out to
have been Smith :-)
Most Union Army pension files contain at least:
The date and place of the soldier's enlistment
maiden name of the spouse or widow, and sometimes mention of a previous
spouse
affidavits from comrades, which are sometimes relatives
physical description
medical affidavits
places where the soldier lived after service
date and place of death
I have also found
alias' or name change information
date and place of soldier's birth
names and birthdates of siblings
names and birthdates of children
a copy of the death certificate for the soldier and his spouse
copy of family bible page
narrative of how they were injured or how they contracted their illness
during the war
