Isaac Higbee Sr settled in 1803 on the s bank of the East Fork of the
Little Miami
River. He built a stone house, which, with additions of frame, survivied til
the Corps
of Engineers built Lake Harsha,in East Fork State Park,in the 1970-75
era. Isaac owned
400 [300? ] acres,of which the house,barn,mills,and 25 acres were
flooded. Maybe 75% of the rest of his original land is above water, but
in the East State Park. Some 15%
of the original acres is south of the park [south of Williamsburg-Bantam
Rd,where it
meets both Campbell and N Sugartree Rd.
The farm house of Isaac Higbee,Sr,in my memory, was reached by a long lane
down a steep hill. [In the 1970-75 era, that blacktopped lane was the
secret
sledding hill for my little girls. ]. Mrs George Jegley just died at 93.
George courted
her while she lived at the ex-Higbee farm. The hill was so steep, and his
model T had no fuel pump,so he had to back up the hill after a date,so
gravity could get fuel to the carbarator from the rear fuel tank.
There were pictures in the Batavia [OR Cincinnati newspapers] of the old
house,and in
it's gable,the builders scratched the date,and initials.
Isaac Higbee was bondsman at Leeds Point,NJ for my James Leeds m 1786
Rhoda Byard. In Clermont,Oh,James Leeds's children ,in part, lived just
across
East Fork from Isaac Higbee. Cornelius McCollum m - Leeds lived the 1st
farm
east. Rev John Collins the 2nd farm west. My Sam Ely m Rachel Leeds
just north, and ,likely, George Higbee,to the south. The present TATE
[twnsp] boat ramp is the site of
the 1810 era Higbee-McCollum mill. Just upstream was a mile long "DEEP
EDDY'
hole of water in the creek.
Cincinnati Dr Johnson McGuire owned the farm as a rural retreat,1950-70
era.
Mr [John Emmitt] was raised on part of the original
farm,say 3\4
mile south of the Higbee HOUSE.
James Leeds parents -John Leeds m a Giffer or Gifford, had a Higbee
bondsman
about 1750.
