2) This is a good site for finding locations:

It shows that Pike township is near Mount Orab.

3) In 1880 Brown county there is a John R. Barr, 8, the son of Samuel and Jane Barr.
In 1870 Brown, the family's name is Bear.
In 1900, Samuel Bare is living a few doors from John R. and his wife.
There are a number of Pitzer families living right next to John R. in 1900 so if you don't find Spitzers, I'd look for Etta as a Pitzer.
