I am in Missouri, but just returned from another research trip to Butler
County. I have used the Smith Library of Regional History at the Lane Public
library in Oxford for many years. I prefer it over the Hamilton branch.
Part of the reason is that my ancestors were from NW Butler County, but also
they just have a really good collection there. When the Regional History
section is open (10 - 5 as I recall), there is a librarian/researcher there
all of the time and they are very knowledgeable of what they have in their
collection. They keep good vertical files of miscellaneous materials, so
be sure to ask about that. They also have all kinds of indexes to help them
and you know if they have anything. If your ancestors might have ventured
into adjoining counties they have some good material that might help there too.
At some point, whether you publish or not, you should send a copy of your
research results to the library.
My Butler County lines are Irwin and Crawford. The Irwin's married into
these families: Thorn, DeMoss, Hinsey, Frazee, Curtis, Pelley, Freeman.
They were generally around Darrtown. My 350 page book entitled "From
Darrtown to Fairfield (IN) and Beyond" is at either branch of the Lane Library.
