Hi,
I know there are some that would like to have updates on the
meetings. So here goes.

We met on Feb. 14, 2004 at the MiddletownLibrary's Community room. There
was an excellent turnout. All officers were present. Dana Pruitt
announced that the marriage book #2 is now available. And the Elk Creek
Cemetery and the Trenton Elk Creek Cemetery books are now available. If
you are interested, you can contact Dana Pruitt
at "dana pruitt" <>

Mr. Jim Philabaum of the Middletown LDS Family History Center was our guest
speaker. He gave an excellent presentation on going to cemeteries and what
to look for on stones, such as the cross or the star and different carvings
on them.
He also had some excellent tips for visiting out of the way
cemeteries. It's sort of like being a Boy Scout, "always be prepared"!

His suggestions when planning to go cemetery hunting:
Things to take
1. A box or other carrier
2. A camera with extra film & batteries. (He suggests also getting one of
the disposable ones as a backup. You never know when you camera will quit
on you just when you need it.
3. Gloves. Very important for getting through bramble bushes, etc.
4. Notebook and/or clipboard.
5. Pen or Pencil. ( Make notes right away, very legible ones. In case you
don't get back to them for a while and when you do, you can't read you own
writing)
6. Maps of the area.
7. Small spade or trowel (for those buried stones)
8. Garden shears
9. Small rake
10. Mace (for the un-friendly critters that may be about)
11. Marker 'enhancer' (plain water works good sometimes)
12. Water. One of those plastic pump up sprayers works well)
13. A compass
14. Tape measure
15. Bottled White Vinegar and a sponge.(for removing moss - never use a
wire brush)
16. Towel or baby wipes for those messy hands
17. Medium stiff brush (not wire)
18. Protective shoes or boots

For Remote "Grown Over" Cemeteries
19. A machete for wacking large weeds and bushes
20. Gas powered weed whacker for the tough weeds.

Have a nice week,
Norma
