On Thursday or Friday, try to find time to go to the Butler County Records
Center and talk with Linda Thompson, if she is available. She is a fountain
of knowledge for our area.
While still at home and after you finish your trip here, ........ Google
... ButlerCoGenWeb ......and run around there for a while. There is a lot
of information lurking around on those pages, if you take the time to look.
The Records Center, Lane Public Library, Benninghofen Museum, and the Ft
Hamilton Memorial are all within a few blocks of each other.

Hi Tracy,

Thank you so much for all the valuable information. I'm very excited to go
there with my 82 year old mother.

I just got my first digital camera last year and very anxious to take it
with me.

What types of info can you get from the funeral home?

Hi Julie,

I live in CT and took this same trip last summer. I am sure you will spend
alot of time at cemeteries and libraries and archives etc. A few things that
I found extremely helpful were the following:



*In regards to death records, most people get a copy of their ancestors
death certificate and then visit the cemetery and get a record from them. I
urge you not to disregard the funeral home. It will likely be listed on the
cemetery record and many of the funeral homes are still in existance today.
I gained more information from funeral home records then I ever would have
dreamed of. I even found a 93 year old living relative from one. It is
unbelievable what some of them can offer.



*When you are at the cemetery....go in to the office and ask what other
people are buried there with the same surname. Unless you are researching a
very common name it is likely they are related in some way. I took photos of
these stones even if I didn't know who they were. I have since connected
some of them to my family tree and am not left wishing I had taken the
photos while there. Also pay close attention as to who is buried with
who....you can find spousal info this way.



*Don't discount the local library. They often have microfilms of local
papers. These are not often researchable online. I especially liked finding
a death date and then looking in the paper a day or two after the death for
the obit. It often gave me lots of info. One record told me of an
organization my ancestor belonged too and I was able to reach out to that
organization for more info.



*Don't forget to go sideways....Depending on what years you are searching it
is not uncommon for some records not to exist. My g grandfather was born in
Middletown (I am certain of this) and their simply is no birth record for
him. I instead researched his siblings and found his brother's marriage
record which gave me the names of his parents and I could then go back from
there.



*Take good notes and bring a camera and label everything.



I wish you all the best. I had a fantastic time while there. I only wish I
had known about the memorial...I would have loved to see that. Guess I will
have to make another trip. :-)

Hello,

The last weekend of this month (April) my mother and I are visiting her
hometown of Hamilton, OH for a family history/genealogy trip. She was born
in 1930 to Edmund Huber and Alberta Stomps. Other names in my family are
Sauer and Biddinger. My great grandfather Henry Huber owned a bar in
Hamilton that got washed away by the flood in 1913 I believe. My great
grandmothers first husband which I believe was Jacob Morner also owned a bar
in Hamilton. I also had relatives in the military.

We will be in town from Thursday thru Sunday and I want to make the most of
my trip there. I want to find out as much information as I can. Can anyone
please make suggestions on maybe what I could do ahead of time and what
places I need to visit in Hamilton?

I'm fairly new to family history and want to make my trip worthwhile.
