In addition, early churches were served by "traveling" clergy, and as Jane
mentioned, they carried records with them. The clergy served many churches,
and might be in one location once a month or more.
Some records of the early Methodist church are now in the historical library
at the seminary near Worthington, Ohio. It is undermanned, or was several
years ago, and I have not had much luck checking records there.
