Beginning in 1867, the Sanborn Map Company produced over 660,000 large maps of more than 12,000 American towns and cities. The company was the primary American publisher of fire insurance maps for over a century, and these maps have become essential genealogical resources in locating the residences of some of our ancestors. Some large libraries with significant special collections may have Sanborn maps of their area in their holdings. Bell and Howell has digitized the Sanborn maps and makes the images available through queries at their Web site http://sanborn.umi.com/ to institutions and individuals through a subscription.
