Janet's post caught my eye. Fletcher and Conover are a couple of tiny
villages across the county line in Brown township, Miami county. 100 yrs or
so ago, my great uncle was a Methodist circuit riding minister who drove
out from Urbana every Sunday in his horse and buggy to preach there and in
another village called Lena.
Here's just a little info that may or may not be helpful...
There's a Fletcher Prebyterian Cemetery which is also in Brown township,
Miami county. I couldn't locate a "Fletcher Cemetery" in Champaign county.
In the 1920 census, there is a 44-yr-old Illinois-born "Birt Jones" listed
in Conover along with his wife Rose. Under occupation, it looks like "schan
foreman".
The enumerator, one James R. Weaver, has very bad handwriting. I would say
he's also barely literate. I see "Ilanois" and "Jersie" and some very
dubious spellings of people's names. So "Birt" doesn't surprise me at all.
The census information is on T625, Roll 1418, Page 25 at HeritageQuest.
Janet, I'll be glad to send you the census page image if you think it will
be helpful to you. It's a big file and I didn't want to just e-mail it
without warning. Let me know. Maybe some other name on the page will ring a
bell. I don't know that you're going to find anything there, but you might
wish to continue your investigation via the Miami county list.
Good luck!
