>From an original journal of James B. Simmons:
"John Archerd, came from England to the United States in the year
[blank], and settled in Clermont Co. Ohio where he married Miss
McMicle, and settled on the waters of Boat Run, on what is now
called the old Archerd farm, here he erected a horse mill in a
very erly day, when mills were scarse. I used to go to this mill
in about 1814-1816. Mr. Archerd was lame one leg shorter than the
other, he was a new school Presbyterian an inteligent Christian
man, his wife died [blank]." Goes on to refer to second wife
Elizabeth Hays and to two children of the first marriage and all
of the second.
Can anybody tell me more about "horse mills"? How about you,
Hermon?
Bill Archerd
P.S. John Archerd probably arrived in Clermont County, from Mason
County, KY, in late 1811 or early 1812. The deed for most of his
property near Boat Run is from late 1811 and there is another deed
early in 1812 for an adjoining parcel of land.
P.P.S. A son, Rufus Hays Archerd, married Nancy Rebecca Simmons,
a daughter of James B. Simmons.
