Unsafe settlement [Indians] started in n Ky 1785 "in neighborhood
forts,or stations.
Unsafe settlement started near Cincinnati,and Manchester,in fort,1789
era.
2 of the 1st 3 armies marching north out of Cincinnati vs nw Ohio
Indians were defeated-halting land rushes to the Miami's,and causing more
forts in n KY and near Cincinnati
Gen Wayne raised an army in 1793,and fought a marginal victory in 1794
near Toledo.-he built a chain of forts north that became settlements.
A series of unkept treaties had preceded the 1795 Treaty of Greenville,
but it brought a reasonably lasting peace. But who knew that then
1st settlement after the treaty of 1795 was from those forts and cabins
in MASON-BRACKEN-CAMPBELL CO KY,and those forts in e Hamilton Co,Oh.. At
least 2 extended family groups who 1st settled in CLERMONT grouped their
cabins to make forts. 3 WOOD and 3 Manning BROTHERS ON Collier Rd,Wash
Twnsp,and near Loveland,Capt Thomas Paxton,and his son-in-laws. Most
earliest settlement was near the Ohio River,or the Little Miami River,or
the Western East Fork. Perhaps the surveyor WM LYTLE'S Williamsburg was
the only 1796 interior settlement. 1797 BETHEL. .
NEXT in importance for settlers was very se Pa. 1790 census, Washington
Co Pa [then included Greene Co,Pa] and a couple townships just north,and
what is now the WV panhandle-just west.
Adjoning sw Pa AND WV counties like FAYETTE,WESTMORELAND,Somerset-AND
Monoghalia Co WV
Next in importance was the drains of the upper POTOMAC. Wash DC west.
MD,VA,WV,and s mid Pa.
NJ was very important for the earkly settlement of the SYMMES purchase
between the LITTLE MIAMI and Great Miami,and a jillion JRSEYMEN SETTLED
ON THE EAST FORK of the Little Miami.
SE Pa-n DE-NE MD next.
Great Valley of Va,and adjoining
Yadkin River valley of NC>mid Ky> sw Oh.
