Twitchin' Jack,

My first inclination is to find two marriages for Rebecca.

(1) Marriage at 16 was not considered wrong at the time. 18 was prime.
After 21--old biddy (NJ talk).

(2) It was often the case that widowed women were called by the maiden
name rather than the surname of the deceased husband. I have battled
several cases of this, and have finally conceded that a woman called by
a maiden name could be widowed. A woman called by both (or either) is
likely widowed.

(3) There was a huge Smith family around Egg Harbor. I can't imagine
that a Dole or Doughty would raise a Smith who was orphaned...unless
there was a connection to the Smiths by marriage. that situation could
confuse a name.

Yes, there are some of those first-middle name confusions. I have one in
Port Elizabeth who shows as Mary, Mary Ann, or Ann. More common with
German-come-Americans, however because of the different naming
conventions between the Germans and (culture-imposing) British.

On the other side of the coin is the notion that Dole witnessed
Doughty's will in OH because they were, in fact, companions in the trek.
There is not necessarily a family connection.

Let me dig up Ron's data...Hmmmm.
