Dad's 102nd seems a fitting days to talk schools.
Bob Slade,of Batavia,Asst Supt of Clermont Co Schools ,was one of us
Local history nuts,
being most active in the 1960's an 1970'. Schools were of particular
interest to Bob,and likely
he published a book,or booklet. What Bob,did, for sure, was have his
collectors of old
pictures, like my mother, scattered around the county, and Bob made his
rounds, gathering those
old photo's, and then publishing them in either\or[?] Batavia's 'Clermont
Sun" and "Clermont Courier" newspaper.
And,microfilms of those papers should be [are?] in the Doris Wood Public
Library,Batavia.
Often,it was a photo of a 1 room school,and it's students on the front
step, and,often,they
are ,largly,named.
Also,in the 1970 era,John Armleader's branch of the 'Clermont Co
Historical Soc' [sic] republished
Theiry and Mitchell's [1891?] History-Atlas of Clermont, and Bob Slade
nearly doubled the original's
size with old pictures. Again, 1 room schools, often with students named.
We have had other collectors of old photos, and publishers of same.
Richard Disney, Mr Smiley,
our own John Emmitt, O.H.Sharp, to name a few.
It took 20-30 years of settlement before Ohio had a public school
law,locating 1 room schools
within a couple mils of everyone. And the villages had larger schools,
and ,long term, Parker's
Academy, and Augusta Ky college. My great grandfather,John F.M.Ely took a
business course at
Farmer's College,Cllege Hill, nw Cincinnati, and Lebanon,Oh had a Normal
school.
Ely's NEW RICHMOND store went bankrupt in the Panic if 1873, and he hd a
break-down.
My grandmother, then thru the 8th grade at New Richmonf, became the family
supporter
at that age,teaching at Anti-Bantam brick 1 room school [Bill Plank's] .
Ely Hill just told me Bethel schools became consolidated in 1936 [8?] and
his dad moved
from Bantam 2 room,to Bethel, where his name livs yet on EBEN C HILL
Elementary.
Maybe Markie Dunn has a story how the Dunn brothers got from Nicholsville
to Bethel High.
Larry Jegley's Mom,Janie, lived to remote to commute, and so she lived
with Dr Wm Eberly Thompson
to go to high school. My mother was so lucky as to have an electric RR
[STREETCAR and baggage ca]
pa st her door.
My dad.commuting to Williamsburg schools to teach, picked up high school
students en route, like
George Musgrove and Rodney Davis' mom. So,you could walk to the 1 room
school,but getting
to higher grades was a problem.
1870 CENSUS OF Brown Co shows my wife's Kirkpatrick's farmig south of the
Germanic Arnheim,
but it also shows a 2nd household,of their children,headed by a late
teens daughter,living in
Georgetown-surely for schooling.
Carl Thompson's 1970 era historyon Brown Co includes the 1830 school
census of several,but not all
Brown Co townships. Census gives the adult's name, and no. of children
betewwn 5-16 including zero.
There was 1 1 room school n e of Williamsburg, where almost all the
students were Waits.
Anyway, there are, today, online OHCLERMO-L and OHBROWN-L those that
started out in 1 room
schools, pre school buses.
