I'm writing with two questions with which I hope someone on this mailing
list can help me -- I apologize in advance for the length of this
posting.

1. I am descended from David White, Sr. (ca. 1777-1851) of Ohio
Township, through his son Alexander (1810-1887) of Wabash Township,
Fountain County, Indiana, and his wife Hannah WHEELER (1808-1884). I
have been unable to get past the "brick wall" of finding David Sr.'s
place of origin. The Everts history (which itself contains some errors)
says Virginia, while he himself listed Pennsylvania in the 1850 federal
census. His son David Jr. (1808-1900) also listed Pennsylvania in the
1900 federal census. My guess is that he could have been from the part
of western Pennsylvania claimed by both Virginia and Pennsylvania in the
1770s and 1780s, but I have no proof. The early land deeds are of no
help, and there is no record in Adams County of his marriage (ca. 1795).
I have attempted to locate the records of the lawsuit pertaining to the
Waters survey on which David Sr.'s farm stood, but with no success. Are
there other Clermont County records I should be looking at? Or does it
appear that my next step is to comb records in western Pennsylvania?

2. I have wondered if local descendants might have preserved some
traditions about the family's origins. To date I have located two, but
neither has any new information about David, Sr. I am now searching for
descendants of Chilton W. White, who died in Clermont County on 31 Dec.
1990. He was a son of Alexander White of Clermont County (1837-1906 --
yes, those are the right dates!), a son of David White, Jr. His death
notice mentions a daughter, Mrs. Raymond K. (Ruth) White, and mentions a
grandson, three sisters, and three brothers -- but does not name them.

Does anyone out there have suggestions about how I might go about
locating these descendants? I could cold-call every White now living in
Clermont County, but there has to be a better way! Of course, his
descendants might also have other surnames, in which case such calling
would be futile.

Again, I apologize for the length of this message. I've been working on
this family a long time, and would love for 2001 to be the year I make
some progress. Thanks very much in advance for any help you can offer,
and I wish you all a 2001 of successful research.
