Subject: [OHCLER] Lost at Sea! "Moby Dick" Nantucket Coffins
Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 13:23:11 -0400
Yesterday and today,tv's had program's about "Moby Dick".
This morning, the program was about the "Essex" which was rammed by
a whale while whaling in the Pacific. Herman Melville expanded upon the
tale of
Nantucket Island's 'Essex" writing "Moby Dick" .
When Sarah Blackman Collins came to Clermont from the Jersey shore in
1803,
it was because she had lost 3 brothers at sea,and didn't want to loose
her sons the same way.
The War of 1812 harrassment of our shipping and islands by the
British lead to a
colony of whaler's from Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Islands settling
just east,se,and
n e of Amelia,Clermont. Butler,Pinkham,Chase,Rathbone,Coffin,
Folger,Wilcox, etc.
