In 1780 Kentucky Co., Virginia (present day KY except some far southern and
western areas) was divided into Fayette (included today's Mason), Jefferson
and Lincoln Counties, VA. In 1786 Bourbon (included today's Mason) and
Madision were split from Fayette, all still VA. In 1789 Mason Co., VA was
split from Bourbon Co. VA. In 1792 Kentucky became a state. In 1794 Mason
became smaller when Campbell Co. was formed. In 1796 Mason lost more down
river when Bracken was formed from Campbell and Mason. At this time Mason
was bounded by the Ohio river the Big Sandy (present WVA) the Virginia-KY
line in the southeast and the Licking River. In 1798 Fleming was formed from
Mason leaving Mason with all the land up the Ohio to Virginia and part way
down the Big Sandy. Fleming got along the Licking and down to the mountain
border with VA. In 1801 Mason lost the southeast most part to Floyd. In 1804
Mason lost the easternmost river portion and points south to Greenup.
Sometime between 1804 and 1820 Lewis was forme from the upriver portion of
Mason. The loss to Robertson left Mason with its present day boundaries.
I have found it important to know the county changes. Your ancestors may
have moved to Clermont from any of the above counties but may have lived on
the same farm at an earlier year when it was in a predecessor county.
Record of your ancestors may also be in a predecssor county. I have found
this to be true in my research.
