If I remember correctly the United States, which issued the "Continental" by
Congress during the revolution, had no formal currency until well after the
Constitution was signed and the subequent establishment of the First Bank of
the United States. For many years individual banks were permitted to issue
money, say as the "Clermont County Bank" etc. The name for our dollar comes
from the Spanish Dollar (silver) which was in wide use in colonial times and
afterwards. Also if memory serves the Pounds, Shilling,m Pence system was
denominaaed on the basis of 12 shillings to a Pound and 20 pence to a
shilling (although I may have that reversed). At that time a pound was a
lot of money so most items would be listed as shillings and pence. They
also had a few other denominations which were Guniea, half penny and
farthing. I think a Guniea was a pound plus a shilling and a farthing was a
quarter penny. I have seen a number of references using Pound, shilling and
pence in documents in the 1790's but not after that when the US decimal
system took hold.
