Ann,
Here's a concern of mine when I was there a year or so ago. There is/was a
section in a Court House attic that may contain records that need to be
reviewed. A book on early settlements was found in this section and
returned to general use. Other early books are missing and may be in that
inaccessible area. One area of the attic contains old, useful records that
are accessible. They are not in good order, however, including old probate
boxes. So my concerns there are two-fold: some very needed records are
kept by an office holder in an inaccessible area, and the accessible
records deserve better storage than they are getting. Without action, they
will deteriorate.
The historical museum has a great library with helpful employees, research
area not open all the time. The researchers prefer to concentrate their
efforts on microfilm that is available to them. The problem is: what
about the rest of the story, those records that may include data that are
not microfilmed?
Those whose family data is found on microfilm will be happier with their
results in Clinton County. But many researchers will have, like me, people
who were there early and for whom the available records don't tell all of
the story.
