Hi,
My Dad is one of the many vets whose primary service records were destroyed.
When we first heard this story we contacted the records center. We were told
that the only records that had been 'discovered' were some MEDICAL records
and that while they might help establish SOME dates of service for SOME vets
who had received medical treatment while in the service they were still very
limited and would not show service discharge status, citations, etc.

You might want to pass this info along to other Lists for research
source info.

Source: An American Legion Post newsletter in Maryland

"The Veterans Administration has reported discovering 10 million
duplicates of 20th Century Military Records. These records were thought
to have been destroyed in a 1973 fire which wiped out most Army records
from 1912 to 1960 and most Air Force records from 1947 to 1964. If you
need records that you were told were burned, you may contact: Veterans
Personnel Records, GSA, St. Louis, MO 63132.

This legend has been circulating for a number of years. I do not
know how to prove definitively the truth of this story, but the
December 2000 issue of what I believe to be the newsletter of the
Illinois state headquarters of the American Legion carried the
following story:
----------------------
LOST MILITARY RECORDS QUESTIONED

It was recently reported in a veterans publication that the
Veterans Administration reported discovering 10 million
duplicates of the 20th Century Military Records. These
records were thought to have been destroyed in a fire. They
were told to call the Veterans' Personnel Records, GSA, St.
Louis, MO
Phone contact was made by this office and was informed that
this WAS NOT TRUE and they knew nothing of this nature.
We will continue to monitor this situation.
