Subject: [OHCOLUMB] Re: Civil War records
I could realy use some help reguarding Civil War records! Where to find
them.
Most of my family were late immigrants to the US, after 1880. But I
have one
great grandfather (Louis Willgues) who was born in Westmoreland co, PA
in
1843, parents Parthenia and William Willgues, unknown where they came
from, one
census says Wales. I can not find this man in his later years even
though I
know where he was when he was 56 (in 1900) in 1915 his wife is a widow
living
with her children in Carnegie, Pa.
The cemetery where his WWI veteran son was buried in 1920 and a daughter
who
died in 1899, and his wife, have no records of him anywhere.
With his unsual name WILLGUES you would think he would not be all that
hard
to fine. I called several Willgues's listed in the phone book and all
could be
directly related back to Louis, all 38 listings!
One man, all one family?
Then I found a Hariet Gover Willgues in East Liverpool who was also
married
to Louis about 1880. For the 1880 Callin's City Directory for Wheeling
Louis
is living with a daughter Mary Ellen (17), from the first marriage? He
also
has Sarah Gover living with him, Sarah is Hariets mother!
Does he meet Hariet through the mother?
Are they already related?
Was Harriet maried to Louis's brother?
Did Louis have a brother?
They must have married after the Callin's CD information was taken but
before
the 1880 census, because they are together and have 3 females listed as
daughters living with them (11, 6, 2), plus Mary Ellen his daughter.
Mary Ellen was born in WV, Lillie and Cora in Ohio and Rosa born in WV.
I would think that Louis served in the Civil war because of his age. He
was
in Wellsburg WV in 1868 when he marries for the first time to Mary
Mitchell of
Washington Co, Pa.
Any ideas or sugestions where to look would be greatly appreciated.
