Seeking info on Anna Caroline Rice, born 29 March 1906 in Linton Twp.,
Coshocton County, Ohio, and her parents, Albert (born 1880 in Ohio) and
Sheridan (Fisher) Rice.

Anna's mother, Sheridan Fisher was married 1st to Newton Brightwell and
had a son, Philip or Ben Brightwell. Newton apparently was killed in an
accident.

Sheridan then married 2.) Joseph Green in 1896 and had a son, Marion, who
later took the name Marion Rice. The couple was divorced in 1900.

Sheridan then married 3.) Albert Rice in 1900, and had children Alice
(1901), William (1903), Anna Caroline (1906), Edward (1908) and Raymond
(c. 1910).

Around 1917, Anna's parents were divorced and her father, Albert, married
a woman named Mary Russell and later moved to Guernsey County, Ohio.
Albert and Mary (Russell) Rice had two children: Mary Elizabeth and
Robert Lee Rice.

Around 1924 or 1925, Anna's half-brother, Marion Rice introduced her to a
much older man named John Earl/Edward Russell (born 1887 or 1892), of
whom not much is known. His friends called him "Jock." Marion Rice
later claimed his name was Jack E(dward) Earl.

"John" and Anna Rice left Coshocton County, Ohio together and moved to
Detroit where they were married in late 1925. Apparently, John worked as
an appliance salesman. In November 1928, John and Anna moved to
Pittsburgh and over the next few years, lived in Vandergrift, PA;
Kittaning, PA; Grove City, PA; Sharon, PA; Gerard, Ohio; Youngstown, OH
where he worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company from May 1934 to
October 1935; then Detroit, MI, where he was hired in October 1935 at
Great Lakes Steel.

One family rumor has it that John may have been born in England, as one
of thirteen children, and that as a boy, his family moved to Canada and
later, Ohio. Another rumor indicates that he was born in Canada and that
his mother's name was Rachel. Another tale suggests that John's family
owned a furniture store somewhere in Ohio and that John had a falling out
with his family over shady business dealings. As a result, he changed
his name and left town. Given the age difference, there is also
speculation that he might have been previously married as well.

In the early 1950's, after John had passed away, a law firm from Ohio
called his home in Michigan asking if he had relatives in Ohio. John's
son mentioned the Rice family connection, but the law firm was looking
for another surname. After hanging up the phone, John's widow, the
former Anna Rice cryptically said, "You should have asked me."

Any info on Anna Caroline Rice or her mysterious "John Russell," Albert
and Mary (Russell) Rice, or Albert and Mary's children, Mary Elizabeth
and Robert Lee Rice, would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Tony Gerring
