Hello Helene!
First, thank you for visiting the Crawford County web sites. Second, thank you for asking a good question. Since this question comes up quite frequently, I am forwarding this on to our Mailing List.
According to the 1881 Crawford County HIstory on pages 348-349, no one really knows where the name Bucyrus came from, but two theories survive: both agree that the surveyor of Bucyrus, James Kilbourne, wanted the name to be completely unique. Because of his classical background, one version is that the daughters of Samuel Norton claim Col Kilbourne was an admirer of the historical character Cyrus, the Persian General who conquered the City of Babylon, to which he added the prefix "bu" meaning "beautiful". The second version is that Col Kilbourne in his later years told a Mr F. Adams of Bucyrus there was a town in Egypt near the Nile River named "Busiris" that he liked the sound of and changed the spelling into Bucyrus. Either way, the name has been spelled the same way since the first legal papers were signed laying out the town lots.
Hope this answers your question to your satisfaction. Good Luck - Frances
PS: How did your town get its name? and in what state is it located?

they seemed to drop out of the sky , when I saw the above name (and we have
31 spellings of the name) I was interested in this town's name.
Thanks for any help.
