Subject: [OHCUYAHO-L] Vital Statistic Bureau

I just wanted to write on this matter also. I have made numerous appointments
at the Bureau. They are always from 8am to 10am. They boot you out at 10
promptly so work as fast as you can. The books go back to about 1890.
Although I have a hard time getting help, the first trip there, I did get an
orientation. I had to grab someone and say, Hey, this is my first time, I
need help in knowing what to do. They gladly showed me how to look up my
family in the books. They then give you your slips to fill out the
certificate # and pull them. It is 25 cents a copy and well worth the time.
I usually schedule 3 or 4 appointments at a time, in person, so the
information is fresh in my mind where I left off.
They really are busy, and like everywhere else, understaffed. That is no
excuse for rudeness, although I find when dealing with any government employee
in downtown Cleveland, that is the way it is! No longer do they think they
are there to serve us, or it is because of us that some of them may have a job
to go to every morning.
Please don't let the employees discourage you from going to do the research,
ignore them. You really can find alot. My last trip, I found the certificate
for my gr.gr.grandmother. I was thrilled!
I recently went to Virginia, to find a death certificate for my g.grandfather
and they wanted to charge about $8.00 for a search, regardless if they found a
certificate or not. We really are lucky in Cleveland, that it is not that way
here!
