Subject: [OHCUYAHO] Securing ship manifest information (Baltimore)

I wanted to share with the newsgroup about my experience. I wrote the
National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC 20408 via email
for Baltimore port ship information (they charge no fee for looking at the
index) and they could not find my relatives on the date I provided.

I emailed records.org and they were able to locate on Microcopy No. 327 on
the Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Baltimore 1820-9 five of
my relatives because for $20 they took the time to do a little research to
see if the surname was mispelled, and it was. One thing was missing...the
cards said "over" to indicate who the rest of their family was who they
arrived with and the residence address in the old country.

One relative's name was missing from the list and records.org sent me back
to NARA who said the records were microfilmed over 40 years ago and the
originals were destroyed. NARA said that all they do is review the index
and never actually look thru the cards, but that the back sides of the cards
were not copied (so I'm unable to find out who all in my family arrived in
america together or their home residence address). :-(

Knowing what NARA can and can't provide, and knowing that some of the
manifests are missing, and knowing that the original manifests had been
destroyed, and that the back sides of the index cards were never copied,
was information I thought the newsgroup would find interesting.
