Rev. Henry C.(Heinrich Christian) SCHWAN 1851-1881 erected the first Christmas tree in a church rectory in the US, to-wit in Cleveland at Zion's which stood where today's Convention Center is. It later moved to Prospect Avenue where it stands today. It is the first Lutheran church in Cleveland. Hnery is buried in Lakeview Cemetery. A Christmas Tree adorns his grave. Paul F. SCHWAN was serving St Paul's Lutheran (E. 55th). It still stands and has its records.

Hello List Members,
Can someone help by supplying the name of the correct church and its past & present location based on the name of the clergy and his date of service found on a marriage record/application? The marriage application states that the marriage took place in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County in March 1891 and that the "Reverend Paul SCHWAN" (no middle initial) performed the ceremony.
In checking the website, Cleveland Pastor's and their Churches, I see that there were two Rev. SCHWANs listed in the Index; one @ "Zion Evangelical Lutheran" and the other @ St. Paul Lutheran. However, when I checked the listing of Pastors @ Zion, then were no Reverend Paul SCHWAN's listed but rather there was a Rev. Henry C. SCHWAN 1851-1881 and to further confuse things there was a Paul F. SCHWAN serving @ St Paul Lutheran (E. 55th).
What am I missing here?
Bette
