First, I want to apologize for getting my information incorrect. I don't need info on Gideon Martin. I went back to courthouse and looked up the NW qtr of Section 4 in Liberty Township. The log house was built on the 78+ acres on the east 1/2. Gideon Martin owned the west 1/2.
THe records I found was that Wm. Green bought the E 1/2 of the NW1/4 on June 3, 1833 from the Govenor of Ohio
Paul Harless bought the same from Wm. Green on Apr. ? 1835
Charles Jones bought the same from Paul Harless on July 7, 1835
James Wilcox bought the E 1/2 of NW 1/4 from Charles Jones on Jan. 4, 1839
Then the Wilcoxes(Doesn't say if James, Sr. or Jr.) owned until Sheriff of Darke Co. sold to John Wilcox on Aug. 11, 1856
The 3 previous owners probably had a smaller log house or never lived there and just bought property. So from the possible age of the two story log house, the Wilcoxes probably James Sr. and Jr. according to family probably built this house sometime between 1839 and 1856(probably earlier than 1856)
Two questions: 1. When did James Wilcox, Sr. build sawmill?
2. Can anyone tell me anything about Wm. Green, Paul Harless, and Charles Jones?
At Garst, obits, etc. don't go back far enough and I haven't been able to tie any current Darke County family to these 3 men. Thanks.
