Hi Jennifer,
I’m very familiar with Henry Cryder Hardin (1848-1934) who married Alice Hulda Levings (1852-1943). I’m interested in knowing how you are related to Henry. I suppose you know that the John Hardin (1791-1851) that married Sarah Carpenter (1791-1879) was the grandfather of your Henry.
In answer to your questions, sorry to say that I’m not going to be of very much help. There is some circumstantial evidence that my Isaac Harden (1784-1865) was probably born in an area of Pennsylvania that, in 1795, became Somerset County. It was Bedford County prior to that year. Both the 1850 and 1860 census give Pennsylvania as his place of birth. I feel reasonably sure that Isaac was an older brother of your John Hardin. With regard to Samuel Harden being born in Vermont . . . I don’t think so (just my opinion). That Vermont assumption is based on the 1850 census entry for Samuel. I’ve studied that record and the place of birth is illegible.
With regard to T. E. Hardin . . . I have no idea and would also like to know who he might be.
I might also add one more thought. The early 1900's newspaper article refers to the colony of relatives (including Harden, Cole, Friend, Patton, etc.) settling at Marietta in 1772. I believe that is too early. History teaches that the first permanent white settlement in Ohio was established at Marietta about 1788. Perhaps our people arrived a little earlier, I don’t know. But if my Isaac Harden was born in Pennsylvania in 1784, it would have been after that year. We will probably never know for sure.
If any of this raises any questions, do let me know.
Wayne
