Hi! I have some information on Vermilion history proper since I usd to be
the librarian/archivist for Great Lakes Historical Society. My successor is
Carla LaVigne (pronounced LaVeen). They have mostly ship histories, not a
lot of people files. A lot of folks used to come in asking for crew lists
and such (everyone's grandfather was a Lakes captain!) but there's more
information onthe shipping companies and ships themsevles. They do have a
HUGE book from the Pittsburgh Steamship Company from the turn of the
century that has crew recommendations and names from various captains. It's
quite interesting. ANYWAY, I am willing to share any information on
Vermilion that I have. It's in a huge research box since I'm working on a
booklet about Vermilion which I hope to have done in another year. So I
can't exactly tell you what I have - I even have a copy of one of the
original plats from the 1830's. It ended up with the Erie County recorder
after passing through many hands from the Huron COunty courthouse fire back
in the 1860's. So I just have stuff on Vermilion. :) And I'll be getting
more in June and July when I'm up there for a research trip. If this is
helpful to your visitors, then please post me as a "look-up person".
Thanks. Cheers!
