Subject: [OHERIE-L] Porter House Hotel - Sandusky
Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 22:41:32 -0500
At one time the Porter House was an elegant hotel. It was alleged that
Charles Dickens stayed there for a short period during his visit to America.
It was also believed associated with the "Porter House steak" a specialty
of the house. It was a large wood frame building on the corner of Wayne
and Water streets. During the 1930s it became run down and during the
mid-forties hosted a number of sleazy taverns, one of which was called
The Zanzibar. How do I know this? Don't ask. There are some references
to the Porter House in material available on the Erie County website and/or
Sandusky's website, relating to history. Good luck.
