I just came back from a trip to Ohio. My sister and I did most
of our research in Fairfield County. However we also went to Montgomery
County and Fayette County. Fayette is the only place I went to the
Health Dept. and my experience there was not a very nice one.
As I was waiting for my turn to be helped, I heard the lady
telling someone who had come in for a birth certificate that they had to
charge so much now because "those genealogisits" were taking birth
records and selling them so people could get false id's and credit. And,
Ohio "Is the worst state for that kind of stuff." When she finally got
to me, I introduced myself as a genealogist, and she quickly tried to
recant what she has said by saying that "it wasn't ALL genealogists, but
a lot of them." I then told her my opinion, and that is that the idiots
in government saw a way to make more money for themselves by charging a
LOT more for something that had hitherto been inexpensive or even free.
I told her that the Ohio legislature simply exploited one segment
of the population--us.
