Subject: Spelling of German Names in Fairfield County

In Carole's posting i.e. I am researching the family of John Pressler b.
1807 Centre County PA, and moved to Fairfield County before 1828.

This brings up an interesting point. Many of the people who first came to
Fairfield County were of German origin. Their names were spelled in German
- i.e. Pressler might be Bressler; Schweikert might be Schweigert or
Sweigert/Sweikert; Baumann might be changed to Bauman; Spon to Spohn,
Schweinhart might be Schweinhard or Sweinhard or anglised to
Swinehart/Swinheart.

B and P are interchangeable in German
T and D are interchangeable in German
G and K are interchangeable in German
C and K are interchangeable in German -Konrad or Conrad sound the same
SS in German looks like a F and may be written as such if misread

Don't miss your ancestor because you haven't considered all the possible
spellings of their last name and or first name.
