Hi Suzann,
I have a suspicion that a few records were lost in a funeral home fire in Wauseon sometime around mid July of 1901. I have a great aunt who died around July 3, 1901. This is known only through newspaper accounts of her tragic death (run over by a runaway horse/carriage). No death record is filed for her. Next to one newspaper account of her death (either in the Wauseon paper or Delta Atlas), however, is the story of a fire at the funeral home in Wauseon (which would have prepared her body after her death, including, I presume, filling out her death certificate).
This certainly wouldn't account for a tremendous loss of records, but I suspect it may explain the loss of a few!
Janet
